The Werris Creek War Memorial Pool has stood since 1968, and its circular amenities block — topped by a distinctive cone-shaped shingle roof and a slender copper steeple — is one of the most recognisable structures in town. By the time we were called in, close to six decades of frost, hail, dust and North West heat had taken their toll.
The shingles had weathered to a patchy grey, with generations of mismatched repair patches scattered across the cone. Lichen had taken hold on the shaded southern face, moisture was sitting in the surface, and the copper steeple had oxidised and streaked down onto the shingles below.
A conical roof is an awkward thing to restore. There is no flat plane to work from, every course curves, and the pitch steepens sharply toward the apex. Stewart set the job up with full height safety and worked the roof in segments so that no section was cleaned faster than it could be repaired and coated.
The restoration ran in stages: a controlled-pressure clean to strip lichen and decades of surface grime without tearing at the shingles, replacement and refixing of loose and failed shingles, a biocide treatment to kill off remaining spores, then a full sealer coat to bind the porous surface. The cone was finished in a heat-reflective white membrane applied in even passes to keep the film build consistent all the way around the curve.
The copper steeple was treated separately, cleaned back and finished in a dark contrast that sets it against the white cone the way the original 1968 design intended.
The result is a building that reads as new from the pool deck while keeping every line of its original character.
